To receive, give!
You have to be open to opportunities and you must understand that no gift is a waste. Learn to be a cheerful giver; give gifts that count. Don't give someone something you really wouldn't value as a gift. A gift doesn't have to be material, it could be your time, energy, you can give yourself. The key is to give a gift that is from your core.
Learn to receive. A gift is not always a trojan horse, you must not always expect the worst from people. Accept a gift cheerfully, keep a mental note and reciprocate. A gift is an arc in an eternal circle, you must reciprocate to keep the arcs growing into a circle.
Your mother told you to say "Thank you". Keep at it, you do not have to appreciate people in your level or those above you, pay attention (even more so) to them and appreciate every little gesture. You must ensure they know you notice all they do (no matter how small it might seem to you) and that you appreciate it.
TriState is daily living.
